Dear President Hrabowski and Provost Rous,

In the spirit of Grit and Greatness, honoring the mission of UMBC to foster an inclusive culture and to welcome inquisitive minds from all backgrounds, the undersigned UMBC faculty, staff, students, and alumni urge you to take immediate action to make UMBC a sanctuary campus for the students, staff, and families who face deportation under the President-elect’s proposed policies.

President-elect Trump’s promise to cancel DACA--Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals--and his promise to immediately deport 2-3 million undocumented immigrants puts many of our community at an unprecedented risk. This threat to our campus family must be met with a concrete and tangible response. An internal 2011 memo declares that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are subject to certain restrictions upon entering college campuses (see https://www.ice.gov/doclib/ero-outreach/pdf/10029.2-policy.pdf). Thus, UMBC is in a position to protect its students from targeted and discriminatory law enforcement. It is our duty to ensure that UMBC actively protects the rights and safety of its community.

Given that many students and their family members now live in fear of the President-elect’s threats and promises, we call on UMBC to immediately develop a protocol for making itself a sanctuary campus. At minimum, we propose that UMBC promote sanctuary through the following means: do not grant permission for the U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement to enter campus; instruct our campus police to refrain from being involved in federal immigration enforcement; and do not share information about members of the UMBC community for such purposes without a warrant. We also urge UMBC to develop measures that explicitly support and retain DACA students in the event of DACA’s cancellation or expiration.

We ask UMBC to join the national movement led by students to assert campuses as sanctuary spaces. We will not allow a climate of fear to impede the educational goals of our undocumented students. As a campus community, we must demonstrate our commitment to providing those students a safe space to learn. We stand with our most vulnerable members and we stand in faith with the mission of our campus. We agree with President Hrabowski that education is more important now than ever, and we seek to protect the rights of our community--undocumented, international, and otherwise--to receive that education. We support one another; we await your support in kind.
